The Freedom of the City Certificate was prepared by “Marcus Ward and Company, illuminators to the Queen – Belfast”.
The certificate is highly decorated with a stylised representation of the Belfast Coat of Arms to the left and a further stylised representation of the Pirrie Coat of Arms to the right of the dedication.
There is a highly decorated and coloured border around the entirety of the Certificate
Below the dedication itself is a rendering, in paint, of a Ship steaming in Belfast Lough,in keeping with William Pirrie’s connection with Shipbuilding.
The Freedom of the City Certificate has a red ribbon and a Gold embossed Seal of the City of Belfast attached.
The full Text of the Certificate is as follows:
“This is to certify that Alderman The Right Honourable William James Perry C. E, J. P., of Ormiston in the County of Down; and the Queens Island, Belfast; Lord Mayor of the City of Belfast 1896, 1887: High Sheriff for the County of Antrim 1898, was on the First day of January 1898 elected as admitted by the Lord Mayor, Alderman and Citizens of the City of Belfast an Honorary Burgess of the City.”
