Photographs of Ballykinlar Internment camp circa 1920-21
In the aftermath of “Bloody Sunday” (a series of significant events occurred in the Anglo Irish War), on 21 November 1920, British authorities arrested hundreds of Republicans and opened up several internment camps across Ireland.
The very first internment camp set up was at Ballykinlar in County Down.
Internees were sent to the camp from a number of areas.
The volume of arrests however became so great that security forces had to resort to setting up additional camps in order to deal with the number of people being interned.
The Ballykinlar internment camp opened in December 1920.
The Camp at the Ballykinlar is situated right on the County Down coast at the mouth of Dundrum Bay about 3 miles from the village of Dundrum which is situated between Downpatrick and Newcastle
In the year that followed the internment camp’s Opening in December 1920 some 2,000 men were interned at Ballykinlar
These photographs record some of those internees.
