“To His Most Gracious Majesty George the Fifth
By the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas, King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India
May it please your Majesty
We the President,Vice President and Governors of the Belfast Library and Society for Promoting Knowledge gladly embrace the opportunity of your Majesties welcome visit to Belfast on the occasion of the inauguration of the Parliament for Northern Ireland to tender to your Majesty the heartfelt expression of our loyalty and affection
Our Society was established in the year 1788 and in the long period that has since elapsed it has fully fulfilled the aim of its founders to encourage the circulation of good literature and promotion of general knowledge. The need of such a society is clearly seen in the fact that our membership has shown a progressive advance and has almost doubled within the past decade. It is our earnest hope that in the new era now opening for Ulster our society may continue its beneficent work with ever increasing success.
This is our heartfelt prayer that your Majesty and your gracious Consort may for many years continue to guide the destinies of our great Empire
