The King arrived at Donegall Quay Belfast on 22nd June 1921 in advance of the Opening of the Northern Parliament in City Hall, Belfast.
One of the first events, in the packed series of events, due to take place that day, was for the Belfast Harbour Commissioners, within whose responsibility the Port of Belfast fell, to be given an opportunity to read an Address of welcome to the King.
A copy of this Address was handed the King, in a beautiful Silver presentation Silver scroll case.
This case was a gift from Belfast Harbour Commissioners to the King upon the occasion of the Opening of Parliament on 22nd June 1921.
The Tubular Scroll case has a hinged Lid designed to encase a scroll. On the outside of the Silver case is a small plaque bearing the Gift dedication from its Giver,
The casket was made by Shaman D. Neill Ltd of Donegall Place Belfast, the Kings Goldsmiths by Special Appointment.
On the day of the opening of Parliament a photograph of the Address casket was published in News reports of the Day
The casket was pictured, in it’s Presentation case ands was described thus:
“This handsome Gold Cylindrical Casket,
Containing an Address of Welcome presented to his most Gracious Majesty the King by the Harbour Commissioners is a fine specimen of the goldsmiths art, having a Royal Coat of Arms and chased relief on one end, and the Harbour Commissioners Crest on the other and bearing the following inscription: –
Belfast Harbour Commissioners
Address to
His Most Excellent Majesty king George V.
22nd June 1921
This beautiful work of art was manufactured by Messers Sharman D Neill Limited 22 Donegall Place, Belfast. The Kings Goldsmiths by Special Appointment”
The Address case is presently on display at one of the Royal Historic Palaces, namely Hillsborough Castle, Hillsborough Co Down as part of the Royal Collection of artefacts displayed within the Castle.
