In the Picture Lord Armaghdale is pictured in a three Piece Suit, with Wing collared Shirt and Tie, seated at a Desk, with some Papers laid out across to his Right. In his hands he is holding an object , possibly a watch, attached to a gold coloured Chain.
Sir John, was born in Armagh in 1850.
He was appointed High Sheriff of Armagh in 1895 and Elected as Member of Parliament for Armagh in 1900 a Seat which he held until 1918.
During his time in Parliament he acted as Whip for the Irish Unionist Party in the House of Commons at Westminster for 15 years.
He was a staunch Opponent of Home Rule and led the Ulster Unionists for two Years.
He was created a Baronet in 1911 and raised to the Peerage as Baron Armaghdale in 1918.
Between 1920 and 1924 he was Lord Lieutenant of Armagh
He died in London in 1924, aged 74.
