American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic Badge 1921
Fundraising in America had always been a mainstay for Irish Republicanism. In the Years up to 1921 there were various organisations that were raising various funds in America. Eamon De Valera was the founder of one such Organisation “The American Association for the Recognition of the Irish Republic”.
De Valera found himself absent from Ireland for significant periods, seeking funding, during a significant part of the War of Independence
He set up this Organisation in order to take over the activities of another Organisation, The Friends of Irish Freedom, which had been seeking funds since setting up in 1916.
This Badge was produced to mark their first AARIR Convention in Chicago in 1921.
The Metal badge depicts the crossed flags of the American Flag and that of the nascent Irish state, the Tricolour.
It is notable that the Colours of the Irish Flag are depicted on the flag horizontally placed, rather than the now traditional vertical stripes.
